Services
Precision Scanning Group LLC (PSG) was established specifically for large archival opportunities, the company principals have over 40 years combined experience in photogrammetric scanning. The principals have been working cooperatively together since 1988, covering a broad spectrum of services within the geospatial industry.
Our expertise in photogrammetry is vast and our experience ranges from topographic map production to aerotriangulation to system development to all facets of image processing – scanning and processing. Our services include consultation, scanning and quality control.
Consulting – Define Project Specifications
Defining the specifications for an archival project can be overwhelming. PSG can help you define not only the photogrammetric scanning abilities but the image frame requirements and any geo-referencing requirements as well.
Aerial Film Scanning
PSG uses industry leading photogrammetric photoscanners Wehrli RM-6 AutoScanners capable of scanning film rolls or individual frames, negatives or positive, black & white or color or infrared and even glass plates. These scanners have an optical resolution of 8 microns and a very high geometric accuracy of 3 microns or less, without resampling of the pixels.
Independent Quality Control Assessment
Quality assessment is paramount in archival scanning projects – the integrity of the returned film needs to be evaluated, the relationship of scanned images to film frames needs to be analyzed plus every delivered image needs to be inspected for pixel size, file format, naming scheme, scan area (capture of data chamber) and orientation. PSG offers these services as an independent evaluation resource.
Archival Scanning
PSG prides itself on its ability to scan aerial film in the most productive way without giving up on quality or risking the integrity of the film. With its in-house “archival scanning methodology” the film is handled as little as possible either by operators or within the scanner itself. We utilize the cost effectiveness of computer processing producing a ”pixel carpet” of the entire film roll with a pixel depth of 12 bits per channel in order to obtain the greatest image definition and guaranteeing nothing is missed at scan time.
Dust & Scratch Removal
PSG has the added ability to use a special dust and scratch removal module for color film. This is a technique of scanning the color film with an infrared light source resulting in an image mask of just the emulsion (less the red, green blue dyes) which depicts the dust and scratches. Software is then used to rubber stamp those artifacts from the original “dirty” RGB image. The key feature is that ONLY the dust and scratches present on the film are removed – there are no human interferences or costs.
